“You’ve got to use this again, Julia!” I said to our accountant. She’s been smoking for decades, and occasionally mutters about quitting. I’ve been trying her on various e-cigs trying to get her to switch – this time I was trying her on an Aspire Mini Nautilus and iStick, hoping that a more powerful e-cig would do the job. “Oh go on then.” Julia lifted the e-cig to her mouth and inhaled. “It’s no longer working!” “Just press the button and inhale.” Julia did as I asked, simply to burst into a fit of coughing. “Here you are,” she gasped in between coughs. “You might have that back!”
Julia’s not the only one who coughs when vaping. Actually when we surveyed 600 vapers, almost 57 % of them said they coughed when utilizing Electronic Vapor the first time: Cough when started vaping. Research by scientists backs this up, suggesting that the most frequent complication felt by first-time vapers was actually a cough and a sore throat.
For most vapers, coughing when vaping is actually a temporary effect. While almost 57% said they coughed once they first vaped, 93% of these will no longer have a problem. Do you still cough when vape? For all those interested, 92% have been vaping for more than 10 weeks, with just 1% of these surveyed vaping for -1 weeks.
All Of Us Cough Occasionally. I coughed just a little once i started vaping, having said that i was much too excited at the world of possibilities before me for that it is a problem. I’ve found that it requires about a day to acclimatise to a harsher juice, therefore i can’t believe that the cough needs to be a continuous issue. I’m sure most of us still cough from time to time when we take too large a hit though!
How come we cough? Most vapers will most likely tell you it’s as a result of propylene glycol. Based upon an extremely rough estimate (put together by Chris Price based on an analysis of forum posts) around 10% from the population is responsive to propylene glycol. (A lot smaller proportion is allergic to propylene glycol). In addition, Professor Polosa explained there might be other elements in vapour which cause vapers to cough: we cannot discount the possibility of other unknown ingredients, contaminants, by-products inside the e-vapour causing similar irritant effects.
But this raises a question. So why do vapers cough when they first use e-cigarettes, although not after sustained use? No-one appears to have the answer right now, only one possible reason is that your body gets used to these chemicals.
In addition, Chris Cost of ECigarette Politics believes that tobacco smoke contains ingredients that are specifically made to avoid smokers from coughing. Chris told me: Essentially, this is why it is possible to inhale tobacco smoke when you can’t inhale bonfire smoke too well, when they are basically exactly the same thing: burning plant matter…. Some of the 9,600 ingredients identified up to now are in there to to create the smoke smoother, less irritating, and to prevent coughing.
Many smokers draw cigarette smoke through their mouths and straight into their lungs. But many vapers, on the other hand, draw vapor to their mouths and hold it there before inhaling within their lungs. Some vapers find that utilizing the same way of cigarettes causes these to cough. Could the difference between techniques explain why people cough whenever they first vape, although not if they are experienced vapers?
Our survey seems to suggest techniques make a difference for at least some vapers. Even though many respondents (40.58%) were unsure or couldn’t remember whether changing technique helped, almost 30% felt it did help:
When you smoke, you slowly destroy tiny hair-like projections on your own respiratory system called cilia. When you quit smoking, these slowly grow back. A by-product from the hairs growing back is coughing – one amongst many negative effects you will find when you give up smoking. This might explain why some new vapers have a recurring cough when switching to vaping. However, it doesn’t explain why smokers cough when they vape their first e-cigarette.
So if coughing is a problem to suit your needs, it could be worth utilizing a more basic device when you start off. Again, you do need to balance this with research that shows cigarette smokers are more likely to successful switch pdcedt e-cigarettes with additional advanced devices. (See Polosa et al: Success rates with nicotine personal vaporizers: a prospective 6-month pilot study of smokers not planning to quit.)
For me personally, finding the right combination for e-liquid and hardware was key. Employed by ECigarettedirect, I’m lucky that there’s never a shortage of vaping devices around me. But it was just when I started sub-ohming having a box mod and an Aspire Atlantis Clearomiser which i could eliminate smoking 100%. I usually enjoyed smoking, however, not the side effects; the breath, the stinky clothes, the breathlessness.
